2023 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay
The 2023 Dutton Ranch exemplifies the Russian River Valley’s potential for world-class Chardonnay. This vintage delivers particularly high intensity, floral aromatics of apricot, ginger snap, and sweet nectarine. The palate offers a hint of chalky minerality, pecan brittle, followed by a toasty top note enveloped in subtle oak spice. This ’23 Dutton is rich and full bodied yet finishes fresh and lively. A perfect Chardonnay on its own, or one with the broad shoulders to pair with cream sauces, cheeses or spicy cuisine.
The 2023 vintage in Sonoma began with replenishing rains during the winter and spring months. This was a welcome event for growers since the previous three years saw varying degrees of drought. Spring followed with staggered budbreak and flowing, then a cool June. Warm summer days followed and sized up the berries, but cool weather returned in September, with average highs not exceeding 80 degrees F. This delayed harvest by 3-4 weeks. The tension was high with the impending risk of late season botrytis. However, the weather held, and the resulting crop delivered the poise expected from a gradual, cool vintage.
This wine is a blend of California heritage selections and Dijon Clones—Hyde-Wente, Robert Young, Rued, UC Davis Clone 4, Clone 96 and Spring Mountain. Historically, Dutton Ranch yields fragrant, tropical aromatics and a crisp mineral character. Planted on the famous Gold Ridge Sandy Loam soil, which predominates at Dutton Ranch, located in the heart of Russian River’s cool Green Valley.
