2022 Moses-Hall Vineyard Pinot Noir
Highly intense cranberry and pomegranate are coupled with savory fruit leather and dried fig, resulting in a generous palate verging on hedonistic. There is opulence in baking spice and cocoa, which further elevates this wine’s aromatic intensity. Full bodied tannins, with just a hint of grip lend structure to the broad finish.
The 2022 vintage was remarkable, marked by a series of climatic challenges and triumphs. Below-average rainfall during the winter months was mitigated by the heavy rains in March and April. A sustained heatwave in August accelerated ripeness, leading to a compressed harvest. The 2022 wines are shaping up to be exceptional, with delightful fruit profiles, acid structures, and concentration. It’s a vintage that captures the essence of the terroir, promising wines that are vibrant, complex, and true to their vineyard origins.
As the name implies, Moses-Hall Vineyard is owned by two of the Patz & Hall cofounders: Anne Moses and James Hall. Anne and James purchased the property (which is located between Hudson and Hyde vineyards in the southern part of Carneros) in 1999. One of the coolest areas of Carneros, close to San Pablo Bay where the chilly pacific winds roll over the vineyard from two directions, the vineyard is situated on an uplifted knoll with well-draining gravelly soils. The vineyard was planted to James and Anne’s specifications to five selections of Pinot Noir: 777, Swan, Calera, 828 and 115. With 20+ years of vine age, the vineyard consistently yields grapes that produce lovely layers of red fruit, as well as darker, more savory elements.
