2022 Chenoweth Ranch Pinot Noir
Chenoweth Ranch is planted to a mix of Dijon clones that deliver one of the juiciest, richest wines in our single vineyard lineup. Savory aromas of wet rock, a dashing man’s cologne and sandalwood meld with a refined red plum and dark cherry purity. The palate of this 2022 bottling is profound, giving layer upon layer of fine grain, almost filagree tannins. Powerful and persistent yet elegant. Past bottlings of this vineyard designate Pinot noir have resulted in 15+ years of graceful ageing, and this vintage will follow suit.
The 2022 vintage in Sonoma was remarkable, marked by a series of climatic challenges and triumphs. Below-average rainfall during the winter months was mitigated by the heavy rains in March and April. A sustainedheatwavein August accelerated ripeness, leading to a compressed harvest. The 2022 wines are shaping up to be exceptional, with delightful fruit profiles, acid structures, and concentration. It’s a vintage that captures the essence of Sonoma’s terroir, promising wines that are vibrant, complex, and true to their vineyard origins.
Like several of our finest vineyards, Chenoweth Ranch was originally cultivated as an apple orchard. Planted in Goldridge soils on the far western edge of the Russian River Valley AVA, this beautiful 7-acre vineyard is in Green Valley, one of the region’s coolest areas, and is farmed almost entirely for Patz & Hall (Charlie Chenoweth makes a small amount of his own wine from the vineyard). Though enjoying excellent sunlight from its slight south-facing orientation, the vineyard is sheltered by steep western hills, which protect the Dijon clone grapes, helping the fruit to retain natural acidity.
